The main difference between these two is their actual use. RJ11 is the cable connector that using in telephone sets while RJ45 is used in networking, where you connect computers or other network elements to each other.

Difference between RJ11 and RJ45 Cables

Aside from the application, there are differences in their appearance. The first of which is in the number of cables that are accommodated in each connector. RJ45 has 8 wires inside whereas Rj11 has 4 wires. As a consequence of having to accommodate more wires, RJ45 connectors are also a little bit bigger than RJ11s.

Advantages of Design

One of the chief advantages of an RJ11 and RJ45 connector is that it is easy to plug in and remove with no specialist IT skills being required. A clip or lug on the back of the jack simply folds down when the connection is made and then sits up holding the jack firmly in place. Conversely, when an RJ11 / RJ45 jack needs to be removed all you need to do is to push the lug down and the entire connector will slide out easily.

  • RJ45 is mostly used with ethernet cables while RJ11 in connecting telephone units.
  • RJ45 has 8 wires inside while Rj11 has 4 wires.
  • RJ45 is bigger in size than RJ11.
  • You cannot plug-in RJ45 cable connector into a RJ11 interface/port/slot however you can do the opposite (you should avoid doing so as it can damage the RJ45 port).

I needed to move my internet router. I have structured wiring with RJ45 sockets between the location where the ADSL socket for the router is and the location where I wanted the router. I purchased two of these cables and plugged them into my structured wiring. This made the equivalnt of a long RJ11 to RJ11 cable. I plugged one RJ11 connector into the ADSL socket and the other into the router itself. This worked.
I chose these cables as they are robust and well made and I wanted a reliable connction.
Note that you must use a separate RJ45 to RJ45 circuit if you want to copy my idea.
