Since MTV's spinoff compilations like Amp had done so well, the network decided to release MTV Jams, a collection of urban R&B and contemporary soul singles that were in regular rotation on the program. Unfortunately, the disc isn't as consistently engaging as other entries in MTV's series, but that's only because a few so-so tracks are thrown in the mix. Toss those cuts out with a CD programmer, and you're left with a good, but not great, collection of late-'90s urban R&B and pop-oriented hip-hop, highlighted by Montell Jordan's "Let's Ride," Mary J. It's a reasonably entertaining collection, but you can't help feeling that it could have been better. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
