Rumours suggest Nintendo is set to reignite the 90s console wars by facing off with Sony’s PlayStation Classic Mini.

GamingINTEL says that Nintendo could use part of their Nintendo Direct address (scheduled for 2pm today) to announce a scaled-down Classic Mini N64. The company itself says the entire video will be dedicated to the upcoming Switch title Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The PlayStation Classic was inspired by the NES and SNES Minis, which proved massively popular amongst nostalgic Nintendo fans. GamingINTEL says that The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, Super Mario 64, The Legend Of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Puyo Puyo Sun 64 and Banjo-Kazooie are confirmed for the console.

Some are already calling the list into question. Scepticism has been raised over Banjo-Kazooie’s inclusion, as its developer Rare is now a Microsoft property and Nintendo would need permission from their rival.

But if the rumours turn out to be true, what else should appear? It would be sure to stoke a lot of emotion amongst fanboys and casual gamers alike. In terms of first-party titles, we’d definitely opt for Star Fox 64, Super Smash Bros., Mario Party and Mario Kart 64. Without getting too plumber-centric, any of the Mario sports series would deserve a place. Harvest Moon 64 could go in, too.

It’d certainly be a shame to miss out on definitive Rare titles like GoldenEye 007, Conker’s Bad Fur Day (which likely wouldn’t stand a chance, anyway), Perfect Dark and Donkey Kong 64 (although, as the series is a Nintendo property, that might not be such a problem).

And a fair few more from our greatest video games of all-time ranking could make the list too. If it actually happens, that is.
