ADY GIL

ADY GIL

Arriving in Hobart, Tasmania this morning and already arousing considerable interest from the media and the general public is the New Zealand built and registered ADY GIL – formerly EARTHRACE the latest ‘‘weapon’’ in the Sea Shepherd ****nal this futuristic looking 24m stealth trimaran recently acquired by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society through a generous $1M donation by businessman/benefactor Ady Gil and renamed in his honour. It is capable of speeds in excess of 50 knots and due to its coating of a special black carbon paint, makes the vessel almost invisible to radar systems. In addition to this the hull is also strengthened with extra layers of Kevlar to give her added protection from the ice of the Southern Ocean, which is where she is headed along with the STEVE IRWIN in another ‘‘Whale Protection’’ campaign this southern summer. The ADY GIL is due to leave Hobart on the 7/12/09 and the STEVE IRWIN due to sail from Fremantle WA the same day they plan to rendezvous in the Southern Ocean some days later. Pic taken ……….. Monday 30/11/09.

Now there's a contrast! The hyper-modern Earthrace/Ady Gil and the timeless brig Lady Nelson (please correct me if I've got my sailing ships wrong). The Earthrace/Ady Gil was meant visit Sydney in conjunction with the Steve Irwin but the plans changed.
It'll be interesting to see how Sea Shepherd plans to use this unique ship. The black paint and this bow on view make her look positively menacing!

G'day Phill
You're right on both counts, It is the LADY NELSON in the background of the shot and yes,the ADY GIL was to visit Sydney. I believe the reason that Sydney was omitted from the itinerary was due to minor mechanical problems on board and it was decided they would be fixed while in Tassie hence the week long stay here.
From all accounts the info that I managed to glean from the crew (at a dockside press conference) regarding the reason for her deployment is that her turn of speed will enable her to keep up with and harass the whale catching vessels which do the actual harpooning. In previous trips south the STEVE IRWIN has only managed to keep up with and menace the much larger whale processing ship the NISSHIN MARU.
Interesting times ahead .......... watch this space!!

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for filling me in! I'll be definately watching this space, the whalers are going to get a shock when they see this vessel charging at them.
Cheers to the whales (and to your photos ;))
