ADY GIL

ADY GIL

Arriving in Hobart, Tasmania this morning and already arousing considerable interest from the media and the general public is the New Zealand built and registered ADY GIL – formerly EARTHRACE the latest ‘‘weapon’’ in the Sea Shepherd ****nal this futuristic looking 24m stealth trimaran recently acquired by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society through a generous $1M donation by businessman/benefactor Ady Gil and renamed in his honour. It is capable of speeds in excess of 50 knots and due to its coating of a special black carbon paint, makes the vessel almost invisible to radar systems. In addition to this the hull is also strengthened with extra layers of Kevlar to give her added protection from the ice of the Southern Ocean, which is where she is headed along with the STEVE IRWIN on another ‘‘Whale Protection’’ campaign this southern summer. The ADY GIL is due to leave Hobart on the 7/12/09 and the STEVE IRWIN due to sail from Fremantle WA the same day they plan to rendezvous in the Southern Ocean some days later. Pic taken ……….. Monday 30/11/09.

Well I suppose there could be a justifiable legal argument in favor of a steersman that ran her over. He could always argue in court that he never seen it due to its color and it never registered on his radar either. Case dismissed I would imagine.

Whilst my sympathy lies entirely with Sea Shepherd and the inspired and extremely courageous band of volunteers who make up their crews, I cannot but help wonder if such a craft, even modified, will be able to withstand the rigors of the Antarctic conditions, let alone what the illegal Japanese whale killers will doubtless throw at them.

There is somewhat of a compulsion to go and look at this beast of a looking thing but all I can say is, thank God we currently have the opportunity to walk a couple of hundred metres around the waterfront, here in Hobart, to view the beauty of the schooner "Shenandoah" afterwards!!
