PORTSMOUTH HERALD

'True Blood' fan joins Team Eric over Team Bill, Team Edward...

Put away the polls! We have a winner (or I do, anyway)

Entertainment Weekly put vampires on its cover last week and I was disappointed.

Not because I hate vampires. Far from it. (Although, we will move on eventually ... right?)

And not because the cover featured Robert Pattinson of “Twilight” again, although —no offense, Twi-Hards — he's not my blood type.

Nor was I upset about Stephen Moyer of my preferred vamp show, “True Blood, ” although —no offense, Bill backers —he's not my blood type either.

Nor was I mooning over Alex O'Loughlin of “Moonlight” or missing David Boreanaz or James Marsters of “Buffy” and “Angel.”

Nah. They were closest on that second guy.

I'm an Eric girl.

Sookie Stackhouse can keep her handsome Southern gent Bill Compton.

I'll take a shot of Eric Northman, or, really, Alexander Skarsgard.

“True Blood's” true dark horse is just emerging in season two.

(Thank you for cutting his hair! Love the track suit!)

In Entertainment Weekly the magazine, the hottest vampire poll appeared to go to Eric.

On EW.com, 48 percent of the vote went to Robert Pattinson of “Twilight,” which speaks volumes for his rabid (oh and I mean rabid) online fan base.

Next, with 17 percent, was Skarsgard of “True Blood.” Tied with 10 percent each were Boreanaz and Marsters of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel.”

Way behind with 7 percent is Moyer, who plays “True Blood's” vamp protagonist, Bill —boyfriend of Sookie, the main character played by Moyer's real-life love Anna Paquin.

Behind him with 3 percent was Alex O'Loughlin of “Moonlight.”

But back to Bill. I loved him last season. Interesting that so many of us are jumping on Team Eric when, really, he hasn't had a whole lot of screen time so far.

Is some of this anticipatory Team Eric action, from fans of Charlaine Harris' books?

I haven't read the books yet (bad me!) even though I have read the “Twilight” series (bad me!) but from what I understand, “True Blood” the HBO show veers dramatically from the text.

As Harris told E! Online,

“Eric has a completely different maker from the maker on the show,” Harris said. “There are all kinds of changes. But I hope that you all see it as a great opportunity to have two different entertainment experiences.”

BuddyTV did a little poll, with 495 votes by Sunday evening: “Do you prefer True Blood stick to the books?”

28% chose “Yes, that's much better.”

72% voted “No, it's good the way it is now.”

I am curious about how Eric is in the books, though.

As one fan commented on the BuddyTV story, “True Blood: The Show May Be Big, But The Books Won't Budge A Bit”:

LilBooth02: “at this point the fundamentals of Eric's character has completely changed and the things Bill does to Sookie in the book are so MUCH MUCH worse than what Eric seems to have done on the show. But at this point I am convinced the TB writers are Bill Lovers so I have thrown my hands up to Eric ever getting portrayed as he really is in the eyes of the bookies. So really the show is nothing like the books except for a few names and plot points. It's one thing to change those types of things but to actually changed the characters traits and habits just seems disrespectful. But hey CH seems fine with it so I will move on.”

In another EW poll, this time “Who's the hotter ‘True Blood' vampire, Bill or Eric?” there were arguments for both, but more —and more effusive —comments from Team Eric.

A reader named Michele took the words out of my mouth when she wrote “Eric!!!!!!! Before, I would definitely say Bill but ever since Eric's been sporting the short hair, he's flawless.”

After their other poll, “Vampires: Vote for the Hottest Male Bloodsucker!” —the one Rob won —fans seemed to get heated in the defense of their favorite vamp series.

* Angela: “Alexander Skarsgard is the hottest FOR SURE. I DID like Pattinson, but I prefer men to boys. =P”

* mrs.cullen: “theres no compition and we all know it. r pattz all the way.”

* Mary: “I'm an adult (as were the majority of the people in the Twilight Comic-Con line) and I voted for Rob. LOL at people still being deluded enough to think that most Twilight fans are teens, just like some people are deluded enough to think that most Harry Potter fans are kids. If Rob wasn't an option, I would've chose Alex O'Loughlin.”

* Margana: “Mick (Alex O'Loughlin) of Moonlight will always have my #1 vote, but where is Stuart Townsend / Lestat from Queen of the Damned? How could you seriously forget him?”

* Nunabidness: “I think what ya'll are forgetting here is this: Twilight=Teens True Blood=Adults Robert Pattinson is UGLY. His eyes are set so close together, it makes him look cross eyed. Period. He's UGLY.”

* Lara: “Have you Twilight and True Blood people even bother to watch BtVS and/or Angel? Clearly, you must not have. Look, if we're talking longevity here, Edward and that other guy would never cut the mustard. Spike and Angel for the win. The fact that they're even on this list, and the shows have been off for several years say so much. Several years from now, will you still remember your precious Edward? Probably not. He's ‘popular' for the moment, but that won't mean much in the end.”

* SiA: “Ok TeamEdward I'll be nice. I'm just sick of all these fandoms hating on Twilight. Especially the Trueblood ones what's the matter WITH THEM? So what they sparkle? BEING DIFFERENT ISN'T A BAD THING AND LOOK what it's done it's gotten millions of teenagers to read and love it. It's gotten older women with kids to read again and has gotten mom and daughters to communicate. IT JUST PISSES ME OFF.”

* Kateeee: “Alexander Skarsgard is the hottest vampire ever!!! xD”

* TeamEdward: “How much you want to bet based on the books that Edward would win all these vampires especially the Trueblood ones because you guys talk the most crap. Edward would win based on the books he would win.”

Have to stop here, because the idea of “True Blood” fans talking the most crap is a bit much to take —especially from a “Twilight” fan.

I think we can all just get along, no? Just because you're a fan of one doesn't mean you hate the other. I'm still in love with Kiefer Sutherland from “Lost Boys” but that doesn't mean my blood-pumping heart can't also beat for the 6' 4” vamp-player voted five times (five times!) as the sexiest man in Sweden.

No more votes needed on that one —just extend it to every other country.
