“It’s just every opportunity for people to be throwing ideas to and from each other; I think that’s what really makes this company successful.”

More about working in Pittsburgh »
Strategically situated near the campus of Carnegie Mellon University and just a couple of miles from the University of Pittsburgh, the Google Pittsburgh Engineering office offers tremendous opportunities to collaborate with leaders in the fields of Machine Learning, Computer Systems, and Robotics.
The core products and technologies being developed by Pittsburgh Googlers include:
We work on a wide variety of projects that are key to Google's Adwords and Adsense products. In order to delight our users with only the most useful advertisements, the Ads Quality team improves, expands and supports one of the world’s largest machine learning deployments. The Ads UI team forecasts future web and advertiser traffic and integrates advertiser input with Google's web corpus to create new and ever-more-useful advertisement formats. All of this work combines intense parallel computing, math, statistics, massive storage infrastructure, system design, and UI design/implementation.
Google is making shopping and commerce fun, convenient, and astonishingly useful. That makes for some large engineering challenges -- like building computer vision technology and mining all that’s for sale in the world. This requires the world's best minds to work on massively-scaled systems infrastructure, apply machine learning, and use amazing web technologies. Learn more here.
The infrastructure teams in Google Pittsburgh improve the productivity of engineers at Google. We make it easier to write stable, understandable code by providing the core libraries that engineers use every day. We make running hundreds of instances of that code in our worldwide production network easier to manage, and we make it easy for engineers to understand the behavior of that code and debug problems that arise in the wild.
Additional projects at Google Pittsburgh are:
Computer Vision for Android: Mobile devices offer unique challenges and opportunities for processing photographs and video. Our work - involving face recognition, image processing, machine learning, and mobile product development - is behind the Face Unlock feature in the latest version of Android.
SkyMap for Android: Also a 20% project, Google SkyMap on an Android phone allows users to discover and browse the night sky just by pointing their phone to space. By using the Android phone's orientation sensors, it can show a star map for a specific location.
